CAT Exam 2026: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the eligibility criteria for CAT 2026?

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD). Final-year students are eligible to apply provisionally. There is no age limit and no restriction on the number of attempts you can make.

When is the CAT 2026 exam expected to be held?

Historically, CAT is held on the last Sunday of November. For 2026, the expected date is November 29, 2026. Official notifications typically release in July, with the registration window opening in August.

What is the exam pattern and duration?

It is a 120-minute computer-based test (CBT) divided into three sections: VARC, DILR, and QA. Each section has a strict 40-minute limit. You cannot switch between sections or return to a previous one once the time expires.

How many questions are asked in the exam?

Based on recent trends, expect approximately 66 to 68 questions. This usually includes 24 in VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension), 20–22 in DILR (Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning), and 22 in QA (Quantitative Aptitude).

Can I use a calculator during the exam?

You cannot bring a physical calculator. However, a basic on-screen calculator is provided for use during the Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation sections. It is generally limited to basic arithmetic operations.

Can I get an IIM call with less than 80% in Class 10 or 12?

Yes, but it depends on the specific IIM’s weightage. While IIM Indore and Bangalore value past academics highly, IIM Calcutta and FMS Delhi give more weight to the CAT score. You will likely need a 99.5+ percentile to compensate for lower academic scores.

Does a "Gap Year" after graduation negatively impact IIM interviews?

A gap year is not a disqualifier if you can show incremental value. Mentioning certified courses, volunteer work, or preparing for professional exams (like CFA) helps. IIMs look for "purposeful" gaps rather than "idle" ones.

Is it better to apply to IIMs with 2 years or 4 years of work experience?

The "Sweet Spot" for IIM PGP programs is 24–36 months. At 48+ months, your incremental points for work-ex often plateau. For those with 5+ years, Executive MBA (PGPX) programs at IIM A, B, or C usually offer a better ROI and peer group.

Can I prepare for CAT while working a 9-to-6 job without coaching?

Absolutely. Success for professionals depends on "Quality over Quantity." High-ranking candidates often use a 2+4 strategy: 2 hours of focused concept work on weekdays and 4–5 hours of mock analysis on weekends.

What is the minimum raw score needed for a 99 percentile in CAT 2026?

Based on recent difficulty trends, a raw score of approximately 75–85 marks (out of 198) usually secures a 99 percentile. This means you only need to get about 50% of the paper correct with high accuracy.

CAT vs. GMAT: Which exam should I take for an MBA in India?

Take CAT if you are targeting the 2-year flagship PGP at IIMs. Take GMAT if you have 3+ years of experience and are targeting Executive MBAs, ISB, or international B-schools. GMAT is more logic-focused, while CAT is more calculation-heavy.

IPMAT-2026/ 2027-Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for IPMAT 2026 if I did not have Mathematics in Class 12?

Yes. IPMAT Indore and Rohtak do not mandate Math as a core subject in Class 12 for eligibility. However, the exam itself is heavily math-oriented. You must be prepared to solve higher-level Quantitative Aptitude (Algebra, Calculus, and Coordinate Geometry) regardless of your school stream.

What is the age limit for IPMAT 2026?

For the General category, candidates must be born on or after August 1, 2006. For SC/ST/PwD candidates, there is a 5-year relaxation, meaning they must be born on or after August 1, 2001.

Is there a minimum percentage requirement for Class 10 and 12 in IPMAT?

A:

* IIM Indore: No minimum percentage is required to apply.
*IIM Rohtak: Requires a minimum of 60% aggregate in both Class 10 and Class 12 (55% for SC/ST/PwD).

How many questions are in the IPMAT Indore vs. Rohtak exam?

IPMAT Indore: Typically contains 90 questions across three sections: QA (MCQ), QA (Short Answer), and Verbal Ability.

IPMAT Rohtak: Consists of 120 questions covering Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability.

Does IPMAT have negative marking?

Yes. Both exams use a +4 / -1 marking scheme. However, the Quantitative Ability (Short Answer) section in IPMAT Indore has zero negative marking, making it the highest ROI section for strategic guessing.
IPMAT Rohtak: Consists of 120 questions covering Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability.

What is the "Short Answer" section in IPMAT Indore?

It is a non-MCQ section where you must type the numerical answer using an on-screen keyboard. There are no options to choose from, which eliminates the "process of elimination" strategy but protects you from negative marks.IPMAT Rohtak: Consists of 120 questions covering Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability.

What is the difference between IPMAT and JIPMAT?

IPMAT: Conducted by IIM Indore/Rohtak for their respective campuses (and accepted by IIM Ranchi, IIFT, and TAPMI).

JIPMAT: Conducted by the NTA for admission to IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya. JIPMAT is generally considered less difficult than IPMAT Indore and includes a dedicated Logical Reasoning section.
